Here's the Sunday strip:

http://www.gocomics.com/peanuts/1953/03/01

It occurred to me to look up the song "Old Rockin' Chair's Got Me" on Youtube - and with a little Googling, I found out WHICH recording they were probably listening to!

(It's from 1929. The singing doesn't start until after the 1:00 mark.)

Here's how I found out how to search:

http://www.sfgate.com/art/article/Charlie-Brown-s-Mid-Century-Modern-life-4486570.php

Quote:

"He likes the song - most likely Louis Armstrong's classic version of the Hoagy Carmichael tune - but there's one thing he doesn't understand..."

(You can SEE Armstrong perform it too, if you search in Youtube on rockin chair Armstrong - but those could be post-1953 later performances.)

From the article: "Charles Schulz museum celebrates Peanuts' Mid-Century Modernism."

In the meantime, can you name any more old songs mentioned in the strip? Preferably the 1950s and 1960s strips, but other strips would be OK too. Thanks.

I've been away from this newsgroup for a while. Here are a few. When I have
a bit more time, I'll try to come up with some more.

Just Before the Battle, Mother, 5/28/1961

It's a Long Way to Tipperary, 7/6/1971

American Pie, 7/7/1972

From Natches to Mobile, 9/12/1978

Take Me Back to Tulsa 11/8/1980

O.K., here's an expanded list. My database is thin in the 1950s so there
may be earlier examples that I've missed. I've ignored "common" songs such
as Christmas carols, the national anthem, Happy Birthday, etc. In some cases
the song is not named or sung explicitly but there is a clear allusion to it.

Note that "It's a Long Way to Tipperary" shows up multiple times.

5/28/61, Just Before the Battle, Mother
7/08/61, Just Before the Battle, Mother
Battle Cry of Freedom
The Bonnie Blue Flag

There's an early strip where Charlie Brown guesses that Schroeder is whistling "Old Black Joe", "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" or "Home on the Range".
