Having encountered this word recently, I seem to remember first seeing
it in Peanuts - was it, or does my memory deceive me?

Thanks.

It did appear in Peanuts.

I was surprised to see you claim that you encountered it outside of Peanuts.
Since Wikipedia knows everything, I looked here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arachibutyrophobia#Jocular_and_fictional_phobias

But apparently Wikipedia doesn't know everything, since its earliest citation
is 1985. The circumstantial evidence is strong that Schulz invented it but
that its origin was lost somewhere between 1982 and 1985. Fascinating!

the center of the earth. ---Galileo, Dialogues Concerning Two New Sciences

Thanks for that (and sorry for misspelling such a simple word :-) )

I've always been sceptical of it as a word, since it clearly breaks
down as "arachi-butyro-phobia" = "peanut-butter-fear", with nothing
about sticking to the roof of the mouth in it... I guess
arachibutyropalatadherophobia* would have been too long.

*no doubt someone who knows more Latin/Greek than I can knock this
word into shape.
